Resumen

Este trabalho analisa as reações populares à expansão do recrutamento militar no Brasil, durante a Guerra da Tríplice Aliança (1864-1870) e na União norte-americana, durante a Guerra Civil (1861-1865). A hipótese é de que a luta pelo recrutamento militar e a consequente expansão dos governos centrais em cada uma das sociedades nos períodos anteriores ao início de cada um dos conflitos interferiu nas prerrogativas locais e voluntárias que prevaleceram em cada uma das sociedades nos períodos pré-guerra.
