The case of Francisco Beláustegui (decade of 1840)2025-06-03T13:59:17+00:00Mariano Klostermariano.kloster@gmail.com
We investigate the phenomenon of informal diplomacy through the analysis of the Francisco Beláustegui’s activity as a close actor of the Argentine Confederation’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during the 1840s. We focus our observation on two episodes. On the one hand, his permanent contacts with the ministers of the Argentine provinces abroad, Manuel de Sarratea and Manuel Moreno, within the framework of the French and Anglo-French blockades. Secondly, his mediation in the negotiations between the Confederation and the representatives of the Spanish Crown towards the end of the decade, in order to manage diplomatic recognition and the installation of a mission in Buenos Aires. We maintain that, although he did not have a formal designation, his articulation with other actors made of him a key figure in the structure that managed the foreign policy of the Confederation given his experience and relational capital.
2025-06-09T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Anuario IEHShttps://ojs2.fch.unicen.edu.ar/ojs-3.1.0/index.php/anuario-ies/article/view/2930Settlement, frontier and demographic transition in the Buenos Aires province, 1869-19142025-06-03T14:12:40+00:00Hernán Oterohgotero@gmail.com
Using geographic information systems based on national and provincial population censuses, firstly the article reconstructs the features of the demographic frontier of the Buenos Aires province from the period 1869-1914, focusing its attention on the spatial heterogeneity and in the continuities and ruptures observable in said process. Secondly, it analyzes the progressive modernization of socio-demographic patterns evidenced by the incipient demographic transition. Thirdly, it addresses, in an exploratory manner, some of the factors –particularly the statehood degree– that influence the observed distributions. Finally, it proposes an agenda for a better understanding of the demographic frontier, through the enunciation of those aspects not yet worked on, both in the micro studies and on the macro scale in which the text is inscribed.
2025-06-09T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Anuario IEHShttps://ojs2.fch.unicen.edu.ar/ojs-3.1.0/index.php/anuario-ies/article/view/2931Child labor in incipient industrialization. Córdoba, 1890-19302025-06-03T14:22:08+00:00Nicolás D. Morettimorettinicolasd@gmail.com
Towards the end of the 19th century, the city of Córdoba saw the first experiences of modern industrialization emerge. Although this embryonic manufacturing universe would soon show its limitations, workshops and industries of various sizes manage to multiply and prosper due to a workforce that openly and naturally incorporates small children’s arms into its ranks. Child labor is not a novelty of industrialization. And their presence in this new area, that capitalist modernization introduces into the city life, soon acquired a legitimacy linked to the benefits that the discipline of the workshop –it is thought– imprinted on the minds and bodies of small workers. These pages seek to continue and extend a path that historiography has long since opened, providing a view from other spaces that helps deepen our knowledge of modernization process in Argentina.
2025-06-10T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Anuario IEHShttps://ojs2.fch.unicen.edu.ar/ojs-3.1.0/index.php/anuario-ies/article/view/2932Waiting for the blackout. Operational analysis of an institutionalized waiting process in Cuba2025-06-03T14:30:06+00:00Duzan Dussier Avila Castellanosduzanavila2012@gmail.com
This study explores the waiting processes associated with blackouts in Cuba from an operational perspective grounded in Discontinuous Materialism (DM). By conceptualizing these processes as sociohistorical institutions, the research examines culturally established actions and strategies, transmitted across generations to confront these phenomena, through empirical case studies and sociocultural analysis. This approach reveals the historical and social impact of blackouts and the associated waiting processes on contemporary Cuban life, as well as the learning and transmission of skills needed to face these challenges. The operational perspective highlights community resilience and solidarity amid instability, offering valuable insights for managing similar crises by social actors and communities alike. Although limited by the sample size and its geographic and cultural scope, this study aims to lay a foundation for future research on waiting processes and the contemporary social history of Cuba.
2025-06-09T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Anuario IEHShttps://ojs2.fch.unicen.edu.ar/ojs-3.1.0/index.php/anuario-ies/article/view/2939Argentine conservatism between 1912 and 1946. An approach based on the actor’s definition and subnational realities2025-06-04T13:22:31+00:00Desirée del Valle Oselladesireeosella@gmail.com
The analysis of Argentine conservatism implies a series of problems inherent to the very definition of conservatism and others derived from the particularities of the case. Hence the need to approach it in a relational way and to problematize the uses of the term, its mutations, and implications. The temporal cut begins in 1912, because, with the Sáenz Peña Law, parties had to organize to participate in competitive elections. The end of the stage is established in 1946, at which point the electoral dispute ceased to be polarized between “Conservatives” and Radicals and began to be polarized between the latter and Peronists.
After discarding elements that cannot be used to define Argentine conservatism, we conclude that its distinctive element is a conception of order as natural (not historical), in which its members should be reserved a predominant place.
2025-06-09T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Anuario IEHShttps://ojs2.fch.unicen.edu.ar/ojs-3.1.0/index.php/anuario-ies/article/view/2940Personal and Political matters in the construction of the historical past. An analysis of the Justicialist Party’s years in government.2025-06-03T18:27:42+00:00Fernanda Maidanamaidanafernanda@gmail.com
In 2007, the Justicialist Party (PJ) in Chaco province managed to overcome party fragmentation through an alliance of its main leaders, forming an electoral front and regaining the government. The electoral triumph stabilized and consolidated Jorge Capitanich’s leadership as governor. The tensions and conflicts arising from the political aspirations of these leaders were resolved through agreements affecting the distribution of candidacies that also allow them to grow politically. However, 2019 marked a turning point in which alliances broke down and recruitment was affected. This loses the mediation of the party networks that had acted until then and tended towards depoliticisation, driven by a policy of modernising public administration, with the subsequent exclusion of leaders and militants. The breakdown of alliances and the discontent of these groups contributed to the electoral defeat in 2023.
2025-06-09T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Anuario IEHShttps://ojs2.fch.unicen.edu.ar/ojs-3.1.0/index.php/anuario-ies/article/view/2935Dynamics of provincialization and nationalization: Santa Fe during the first two governments of the Justicialist Party (c. 1983-1991)2025-06-03T18:36:15+00:00Hugo Ramosramoshugo78@gmail.com
This article analyzes the roots of the so-called “provincialization” of Argentine political dynamics and party system, taking the case of the province of Santa Fe during the first two Justicialist governorships (c. 1983-1991). It intends to debate with the literature on the subject, which situates this phenomenon during the 1990s, reconstructing some processes that we believe were the necessary antecedents. Likewise, we analyze how the ruling party of this district adapted, promoted and conditioned the processes of provincialization, as well as the internal tensions that characterized it. The article is based on interviews with leaders and militants of Santa Fe Peronism who held important positions in the party and in the provincial administration in the 1980s, as well as on official documentation, newspaper articles and specialized bibliography.
2025-06-09T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Anuario IEHShttps://ojs2.fch.unicen.edu.ar/ojs-3.1.0/index.php/anuario-ies/article/view/2936The boom of provincialisms in the Argentine Patagonia of the 21 century. A multilevel comparative analysis.2025-06-03T18:47:53+00:00Jimena Pesquero Bordónjpesquerosoc@gmail.com
The objective is to know the nature, causes and effects of the boom of ruling subnational political parties or provincialisms in the Argentine Northern and Central Patagonia (2015-2023) through three comparative case studies: Juntos Somos Río Negro (Río Negro), Chubut Somos Todos (Chubut) y Comunidad y Desarrollo Ciudadano (Neuquén). It focuses on the horizontal relations of diffusion between the provinces that affect their autonomy degree and the effects on their parties and party systems. This study contributes to the knowledge of three contemporary Patagonian province cases, and their multilevel effects. Nevertheless, at the same time, it aims to be a theoretical and methodological contribution to the study of subnational parties and party systems in Argentina in the twenty-first century. A conceptual precision of the term provincialism is offered to overcome its idiosyncratic bias and contribute to its construction as an object of study still little explored by literature.
2025-06-09T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Anuario IEHShttps://ojs2.fch.unicen.edu.ar/ojs-3.1.0/index.php/anuario-ies/article/view/2937From the city of Buenos Aires to the bonaerense territory: the pro’s growth for the mayors’ offices in the province of Benos Aires (2015-2023)2025-06-03T19:10:09+00:00Agustín Salernoagustinnsalerno@gmail.com
The Republican Proposal (PRO) party, born in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, has tried to expand into other subnational territories of Argentina since its origins. Based on a database of electoral results from 2015-2023 and the analysis of specialised literature, we analyse the electoral performance of the party from its birth until 2023 in the 135 municipalities of the province of Buenos Aires. The paper shows the relevance that the formation of the Cambiemos alliance in 2015 had for the party’s electoral growth and the capacity of local representatives to face adverse situations, such as the 2019 elections and the emergence of a new radical right-wing option in 2023. While, on the one hand, the reelections of some mayors were fundamental for the party’s resilience, on the other hand, the municipalities in the interior of the province acted as refuge spaces for the PRO in situations in which Cambiemos did not perform well at the national level.
2025-06-09T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Anuario IEHShttps://ojs2.fch.unicen.edu.ar/ojs-3.1.0/index.php/anuario-ies/article/view/2938Misunderstood nationalization. Revisiting political nationalization: Schattschneider, Rokkan and the Argentine case2025-06-03T19:17:01+00:00Carlos A. Varettocvaretto@conicet.gov.arMario F. Navarromario.navarro@unc.edu.ar
This article contributes to elucidating the concept of nationalization. It proposes that this task is best carried out if the resonance of the concept is considered; that is, the problematic context that led to its theorization. To this end, two fundamental authors, Eric Schattschneider and Stein Rokkan, are reinterpreted to show that each of them forged his theory based on a distinctive political problem. Once this difference has been established, the paper undertakes an empirical exercise that evaluates the suitability of Rokkan’s theorization to understand the Argentine political process. To this end, it studies long-term trends in party participation and competitiveness. It is concluded that Rokkan’s elaboration cannot adequately account for the process of political nationalization in Argentina and, with this, Schattschneider’s perspective turns ready for the purposes of political diagnosis of the problems and potentialities on Argentine political institutions.
2025-06-09T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2025 Anuario IEHS
