In the case of Oaxaca, research indicates that the chiefs and cacicas of the region managed to maintain their status and privileges until the 18th century. In addition, many of them moved their residence to the city of Antequera, the current capital of the state. In this sense, this research focuses on this sector of the population that moved to the capital, from the study of unpublished sources for the study. The rigorous analysis of the documentation exposes a novel and complex panorama of the socioeconomic situation of the indigenous nobility in the south of New Spain. It demonstrates how some caciques maintained privileges and wealth in the urban environment, while others had to adapt to less favorable economic and social conditions.
Maira Cristina Córdova Aguilar Copyright (c) 2025 Anuario IEHS https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0 2025-12-10 2025-12-10 40 2 10.37894/ai.v40i2.3054 Territory and domain. A first approach to the forms and displacements of jurisdictional war forces in Corrientes between 1820 and 1850 https://ojs2.fch.unicen.edu.ar/ojs-3.1.0/index.php/anuario-ies/article/view/3055
This is an introductory study to the analysis of the relationship between war forces and territory in the State of Corrientes during the first half of the 19th century. It outlines the variations that occurred during the period under consideration in relation to the war forces organized by the State and coordinated with local territorial leaders. It provides a panoramic review of the combat units, their location, and some movements; and proposes hypotheses regarding the factors that may have played a role in the dissolution of these latter groups. It seeks to provide a comprehensive view of how a territorial space gradually acquires consistency and meaning for a local ruling group, thanks to the establishment of its war forces.
Aldo Avellaneda Copyright (c) 2025 Anuario IEHS https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0 2025-12-10 2025-12-10 40 2 10.37894/ai.v40i2.3055 Towards the «nueva Buenos Aires». The political idea of the city of La Plata (1880-1882) https://ojs2.fch.unicen.edu.ar/ojs-3.1.0/index.php/anuario-ies/article/view/3056
This article explores the situation in which the political leadership of Buenos Aires province conceived the city of La Plata. In response to the federalization of the historic capital of Buenos Aires, the new one was projected as a great city that, through its port condition, would seek to dispute the urban hegemony of the Republic capital. Analyzing legislative documentation, press, and correspondence, the essay shows that La Plata was thought as a “new Buenos Aires” from the contributions of Juan Bautista Alberdi and the theoretical-political systematization made by Governor Dardo Rocha. His large majority in the Legislature, the financial autonomy enjoyed by his district and the momentary support given to him by President Julio A. Roca composed a favorable occasion for a project such as that of La Plata to be considered possible.
Valentín Magi Copyright (c) 2025 Anuario IEHS https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0 2025-12-12 2025-12-12 40 2 63 84 10.37894/ai.v40i2.3056 Eusebio Mañasco, the unfortunate victim of the yerbatales. A famous case in the urban popular press. Argentina, 1927 https://ojs2.fch.unicen.edu.ar/ojs-3.1.0/index.php/anuario-ies/article/view/3057
This article examines the public construction of Eusebio Mañasco, a union leader convicted of murder in 1921, in a judicial case notoriously regarded as irregular. In 1927, after six years in prison, Mañasco became a public figure through the campaign led by labor unions, trade union press, and popular urban press, which portrayed him as a martyr, hero, and victim. The newspapers Crítica and Última Hora, in particular, took up their cause and multiplied its echoes and effects within the framework of the international campaigns in support of Sacco and Vanzetti, which turned class justice into a public issue. Through the analysis of the multiple meanings with which he was associated in these widely circulated evening newspapers in Argentina, this article poses a question that has not been addressed by historiography: how did Eusebio Mañasco become a celebrity in 1927?
Luciana Anapios Copyright (c) 2025 Anuario IEHS https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0 2025-12-10 2025-12-10 40 2 85 115 10.37894/ai.v40i2.3057 Shadow and light: anarchist views on fascism(s), libertarian press, and intellectuals in Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina (1921-1945) https://ojs2.fch.unicen.edu.ar/ojs-3.1.0/index.php/anuario-ies/article/view/3058
This article aims to analyze anarchist perspectives on fascism, focusing on the reflections of intellectuals, activists, and periodicals that circulated between Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. For anarchists, the analysis of fascism encompassed the economic dimension, as well as political forms of domination (the State), along with its ideological and religious expressions. Two prominent intellectuals in this debate were Maria Lacerda de Moura and Luce Fabbri, who moved through these regions and became key references not only in the Americas but also on a global scale about their analyses of fascism. Among the most influential periodicals in the labor movement of the time that addressed the issue of fascism were La Protesta (Argentina), Studi Sociali (Uruguay-Argentina), and A Plebe (Brazil), all of which had international connections. The article first contextualizes the labor movement in these countries and the presence of anarchism in this process. It then explores the trajectories and analyses developed by these intellectuals and the libertarian press during this period.
Kauan Willian dos Santos Copyright (c) 2025 Anuario IEHS https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0 2025-12-10 2025-12-10 40 2 117 134 10.37894/ai.v40i2.3058 Cartographies of childhood: Experiences, Representations and Practices from Historical Perspective https://ojs2.fch.unicen.edu.ar/ojs-3.1.0/index.php/anuario-ies/article/view/3070
.
María Carolina Zapiola Alejandra Josiowicz Copyright (c) 2025 Anuario IEHS https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0 2025-12-10 2025-12-10 40 2 137 138 10.37894/ai.v40i2.3070 Reading Lev Tolstoy: his pedagogical writings and their relevance in today’s education https://ojs2.fch.unicen.edu.ar/ojs-3.1.0/index.php/anuario-ies/article/view/3072
In the context of the development of the nation-states in Europe and America, school was established as a fundamental element. This led to the emergence of educational alternatives that challenged education considered "traditional", forming part of what was known as "Escolanovismo" or "New School". Although its impact in our region began in the mid-20th century, there were some previous experiences that took part in its postulates. How far can the origins be traced? Were there other educational projects outside the "Western-European" orbit which early on raised ideas similar to those proposed by the "New School"? To shed light on these questions, we will see that there was in the figure of the Russian writer Lev Tolstoy a teacher concerned about the schools of his time. His brief, though intense, pedagogical activity left traces that can still be found, for example, in the education of our country, an issue which has been little explored , at least in Argentine historiography.
Julia Olazábal Copyright (c) 2025 Anuario IEHS https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0 2025-12-10 2025-12-10 40 2 139 155 10.37894/ai.v40i2.3072 Making puppets at school https://ojs2.fch.unicen.edu.ar/ojs-3.1.0/index.php/anuario-ies/article/view/3073
In Los niños y los títeres (1944), Javier Villafañe included a list of puppet theatres operated by children in Argentine schools. This record draws attention to an underexplored chapter in the –also underexplored– history of puppetry. To counter this situation, we will examine four projects from the list: the Trapisonda theatre, directed by Alfredo Bagalio; the Pinocchio theatre, headed by María Luisa Madueño and Margarita Albertella; and the Javier Villafañe theatres, directed by Leticia Cossettini and María del Carmen Sánchez Rego, respectively.
We propose that Villafañe's goal of teaching "the old and simple art of puppetry" was based on the conception of children as active and creative subjects, and this connects with the ideas of renewal circulating in the educational field. We will explore the perspectives of teachers and authorities, observing the objectives, the connection with the curriculum content, and the connection with the community.
Bettina Girotti Copyright (c) 2025 Anuario IEHS https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0 2025-12-10 2025-12-10 40 2 157 177 10.37894/ai.v40i2.3073 «To the turbulent boy, terror of windows, dogs, and cats» https://ojs2.fch.unicen.edu.ar/ojs-3.1.0/index.php/anuario-ies/article/view/3074
This study analyzes the responses to the recreational and socialization practices of children from working-class families in Buenos Aires between the late 19th century and the early decades of the 20th century. It examines initiatives led by various social sectors –educational authorities, teachers, physical education instructors, police officers, council members, and municipal authorities, as well as neighbors organized in the rapidly expanding neighborhood associations in the city's emerging working-class districts– who were concerned about children's presence in the streets and their forms of sociability. Its hypothesis is that, transcending the more well-known asylum-based and punitive approach, these sectors promoted urban space reforms, including the installation of playground equipment in parks and the creation of designated recreational areas to keep poor children off the streets. The study draws on a diverse range of documentary sources, including census, municipal, educational, police, and child welfare reports, as well as publications from neighborhood associations, and so on.
Ludmila Scheinkman Copyright (c) 2025 Anuario IEHS https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0 2025-12-10 2025-12-10 40 2 179 199 10.37894/ai.v40i2.3074 Childhood and war in argentine illustrated magazines before the Great War https://ojs2.fch.unicen.edu.ar/ojs-3.1.0/index.php/anuario-ies/article/view/3075
This article aims to contribute to the study of the relationship between childhood and war in Argentina in the early 20th century, before the First World War. It is a research proposal that draws on inquiries conducted by the history of childhood and the social and cultural history of war. We will examine this relationship through an analysis of the representations associated with childhood and war in two illustrated magazines, P.B.T. and Caras y Caretas. We will focus on those productions aimed at children, or those that featured children as protagonists or references.
Bárbara Raiter Copyright (c) 2025 Anuario IEHS https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0 2025-12-10 2025-12-10 40 2 201 223 10.37894/ai.v40i2.3075 Towards a cartography of the transformations in the forms of playing and conceiving childhood in digital culture https://ojs2.fch.unicen.edu.ar/ojs-3.1.0/index.php/anuario-ies/article/view/3078
Incorporating perspectives from childhood studies in Latin America and video game studies, we analyze the case of Railander Games, a video game rental store located in the interior of the Ceará state. Through a social project funded primarily by donations from the gaming community that experienced the video game rental store phenomenon in the 1990s, it establishes a space where working-class children play video games and allows for reflection on the collective practice of playing games in childhood. Considering the inequalities in access to and use of technology worldwide, particularly in peripheral regions of the Global South, we analyze the ways of playing and being a child that emerge in the technodiscourses surrounding the project, which has become popular in recent years through digital platforms such as X. By analyzing the posts shared on the Railander Games account, which showcase the routines of the rental store and its patrons, we can see how technodiscourses allow for reflection on contemporary ways of thinking about childhood and playing.
Michele Passos Rommel Silva Alejandra Judith Josiowicz Copyright (c) 2025 Anuario IEHS https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0 2025-12-10 2025-12-10 40 2 225 241 10.37894/ai.v40i2.3078
