Abstract

An outstanding feature of several regions is the formation of communities of Africans and their descendants intermixed with indigenous populations. For colonial Brazil there is evidence of the formation of such communities in several captaincies. In this paper I analyze these interethnic connections and the development of ethno-genesis involving indigenous peoples, Africans and the first generations of colonial sectors in Goiás and Mato Grosso in the eighteenth century. Focusing on what is still a little-known subject in the analysis of socio-political and demographic reconfigurations in colonial processes, I assess how these colonial maroon colonies emerged and how they were perceived.
