Keywords:
Business Failures, Bankruptcy, Legislation, Commercial CreditAbstract
This article discusses some of the features that characterize Argentine companies' failures in the early 20th century. This analysis has focused on bankruptcy and insolvency procedures, exploring business failure data (such as liability size and the most affected business sectors). The study of these phenomena yields a number of questions on the characteristics of local capitalism, stressing the relationship between economic actors and their credit relationships, as well as the design and use of legal devices associated with bankruptcy processes in Argentina. This discussion focused on the first three decades of the 20 century, when Law 4.156, approved th in 1902, was in effect. This bankruptcy law was only replaced in 1933 by Law 11.719.
