Abstract

Still, there is a great debate on the historical meaning and features of the city and urban worlds that prove the great diversity of the phenomenon in past societies. Those definitions rooted on the basis of formal characteristics frequently are insufficient. In early modern Spain demographical, economical, social, juridical and cultural features built city as well as urban morphology and architecture. Every city was the result of the specific combination of urban features and functions. These showed how intense the urban presence was for the building of every city. All these points are analyzed in this article that also deals with the historical lexicon on the matter to take part in the debates on the definition of the urban presence in early modern Spain, but within the European context. This was at those times a dynamic phenomenon affected by features different in nature and in the long run historical perspective.
