Abstract

These pages are centered on the political elites that composed the Partido Autonomista Nacional (PAN) who enjoyed a high degree of influence in the nomination of the party’s presidential candidate and on the presidential election itself. The consolidation of an hegemonic party in 1880 strained fundamental aspects of the institutional system (particularly the federal system and the principle of representation). The dynamic generated inside the PAN offered significant variations even thought the institutional system did not change during these years.
