This article aims to reflect on the challenges of how to research the north of Mexico, during the Eighteenth and Twentieth centuries. Based on a critic of the author’s own academic production, his intend is to use as a key argument the link between the center and the northern Mexican provinces. He also formulates a chronology as well as a characterization, on the peculiarities of the north, on its connection with the center of Mexico, and on the center itself, namely Mexico City, the headquarters of the colonial and the national state.
