Abstract

The relationship between housing and family in Buenos Aires during the first half of the 20th Century is analyzed in this article. Bearing in mind the home scenario, it observes the ways in which the different family models lived in the domestic space. Quantitative and qualitative sources, where statistic information from census data is the most important issue are used. The aim of this work is to relate the different family structures to the housing space; thus enabling us to look at the difficulties of the “nuclear family” ideal - lodging in a house for their own- to became hegemonic in a market where shortage of housing fostered different family units to live together.
