Abstract

This article traces the origins of the Argentinean social Catholics' interest in the "middle class" as a social group, and analyzes the transformations in the reasons for such interest. From the early evidences after 1919, two other moments ofpervasive interest in the middle class are identified: that ofthe 1930s and that ofthe· later years of Peron's second presidency. The author argues that the Catholics' interest in the middle class has a "counterinsurgent" component, related to fear fbr the advance of communism first, and for peronism later.
