Abstract

This essay explore how such phenomena as migration and exile have been perceived and interpreted by their protagonists. An example of this is the case of Alfonso R. Castelao. A Galician artist, writer and political leader. who reflected upon Galician mass migration. and later on upon the Galician and Spanish Republican exile. through his artistic paintings as well as through his literary and political writings. Contrary to most Galician and Spanish Republican exiles. Castclao's interprelation alter 1940 of "economic'' migration became increasingly positive and optimistic, while his own perception of the community of Republican exiles tended to be pessimistic and negative. This changes in his view had much to do with the evolving requirements met by his nationalist political project. but al so with his own personal experience as both migrant and Republican exile.
