Abstract

The proposals to continue the pacific traditional dealing with the indigenous peoples of the south Argentine border were maintained in practice beyond the constitution of the Argentine State in 1853, up to the beginning of the military campaigns of conquest of the Pampa in 1875. During this period. which has not been studied till now from this approach, the determination of the state politics towards the frontier population ensued from a difficult process during which divergent positions were confronted. The agreement around the military conquest was late and never monolithic, and the option for continuing the traditional pacific dealing was supported in the time. We propose to demonstrate it by means of the analysis of political-institutional papers of the epoch.
