From Nazi propaganda to Bonn’s cultural diplomacy
Continuities, mediators and anti-communism in Argentina (1955-1966)

This article examines the continuities and reconfigurations between the cultural diplomacy of the Third Reich and that of the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) in the post-war period, focusing on the Argentine case between 1955 and 1966. From diplomatic documentation, state archives and journalistic sources, it reconstructs the strategies through which the FRG reorganized its foreign cultural policy and reestablished links with actors previously connected with the German world during the Nazi period. Far from an absolute break, the post-war period showed the persistence of personal, institutional and discursive networks, resignified in the context of the Cold War. The article addresses the reconstruction of the cultural apparatus of Bonn, the convergence between cultural diplomacy and anti-communism, and the role of the German community as mediator. It argues that cultural diplomacy functioned as a space of transformed continuity, articulating inherited repertoires around anti-communism, Christian democracy and the defense of the West.
