In February 1967, Paraguayan women gathered in Asunción decided to offer to the President of Paraguay, Francisco Solano López, a gold-bound manuscript which included their project to collect jewels nationwide in order to finance the war. What does this book represent? How is it linked to the other presents given to the President during the war period? This article studies the production context of the Gold Book, focusing on making it part of a wider gift system between 1864 and 1868. This work also wants to approach the characteristics of such a system and to unveil its actors, who change throughout the war time, revealing the general atmosphere in the Paraguayan capital as in other areas far from the battlefields.
