Political identity, class, and masculinity: Moustaches in Argentina, from Rosas to Yrigoyen

Styles of facial hair convey meanings about status, politics and attitude. This article explores the significance of facial hair, especially moustaches, in nineteenth-century Argentina. During the Rosas era, I contend, political antagonism largely determined hair styles. This changed after the formation of the liberal state. Social status, rather than political affinity, became the primary determinant of hair styles. Moustaches conferred masculinity and, therefore, struggles revolved around the right, or denial of the right, to wear moustaches. The last part of the article explores the demise of the moustache as a symbol of masculinity after WWI.
