Abstract

We analyze the transformations in land tenure in two areas with a great agricultural aptitude and without peasant societies previous to their productive expansion (The US Corn Belt and the Argentine Corn Pampa), during a period of an intense technological change (the second half of the XX century). ln this way, we are trying to improve the knowledge about the relationship between the agrarian capitalism developrnent and the consolidation of a specific form of land tenure. Our methodology has been the comparison of census data about the quantity and the area occupied by different farms distinguished by their forms of tenure between 1947 and 1988. The basic sources have been the Censos Nacionales Agropecuarios of 1937,1947, 1969 and 1988 and the Census of Agriculture of 1940, 1950. 1969, 1987 and 1992. We also added information published by the agricultural experiment stations of both regions.
