Abstract
From time immemorial, rivers have played an important role in the development of humanity and have been use for different socio-economic purposes, including for recreation. At present, rivers constitute a natural attraction for the practice of different recreational and sports and outdoors activities. However, not all rivers, nor the different sections or sectors of the same river, present the same characteristics, nor do they have the same possibilities and / or limitations for the recreation and leisure of the resident population and visitors. The purpose of this paper is to describe and propose a procedure for assessing the recreational potential of rivers or sections of the same, -for bathing and swimming- based on observable characteristics, mostly from naked eye. We refer mainly to geographic characteristics, those of the landscape (natural and anthropic), as well as aesthetic, patrimonial and other characteristics related to existing service facilities. In total 31 independent variables are assessed through on-site observation. The results of these assessments can facilitate planning the activities and investment necessary both for the recreational use and for the conservation of new sites or places of interest. Furthermore, with regards those rivers currently exploited, it contributes to establishing adequate measures to reduce the negative impact derived from its use and facilitate its recovery.
