Performance of Argentine universities in international sustainability rankings

Resumen

Las Instituciones de Educación Superior (IES) juegan un rol fundamental en la promoción del desarrollo sostenible y en el cumplimiento de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS) de la Agenda 2030. Este estudio analiza la participación de las IES argentinas en tres rankings internacionales de sostenibilidad: UI GreenMetric (UI-GM), THE Impact Rankings (THE-IR) y QS World University Rankings: Sustainability (QS-S). A través de un enfoque cuantitativo y comparativo, se evaluaron las posiciones y puntuaciones de las IES argentinas en cada ranking, y se identificaron las principales áreas de fortaleza y debilidad en su desempeño.

El análisis se centró en la evaluación de indicadores clave como la gestión de recursos naturales, energía, residuos, educación e investigación, así como la contribución a los ODS. Además, se realizó una comparación entre IES públicas y privadas, evaluando diferencias en su rendimiento en sostenibilidad.

Los resultados revelan una disparidad significativa en el desempeño de las IES argentinas entre los rankings, lo que sugiere que cada ranking prioriza diferentes dimensiones de la sostenibilidad. Las instituciones, como la UIES públicas, como la Universidad Nacional de Córdoba (UNC), la Universidad Nacional del Litoral (UNL) y Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA), mostraron un mejor rendimiento general en comparación con las privadas, debido en parte a su mayor acceso a recursos y políticas institucionales de sostenibilidad. Asimismo, se observó una correlación positiva entre la inversión en educación e investigación en sostenibilidad y el rendimiento en la gestión operativa de las IES, durante el año 2024.

El estudio concluye que las IES argentinas tienen un gran potencial para mejorar su posicionamiento en los rankings de sostenibilidad a través de una integración más profunda entre la educación, la investigación y la gestión operativa sostenible. Se sugieren recomendaciones para optimizar el rendimiento de las IES en estos rankings, alineadas con la Agenda 2030.

Abstract

Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) play a fundamental role in promoting sustainable development and fulfilling the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda. This study analyzes the participation of Argentine HEIs in three international sustainability rankings: UI GreenMetric (UI-GM), THE Impact Rankings (THE-IR), and QS World University Rankings: Sustainability (QS-S). Using a quantitative and comparative approach, the positions and scores of Argentine universities in each ranking were evaluated, identifying key areas of strength and weakness in their performance.

The analysis focused on assessing key indicators such as natural resource management, energy, waste management, education and research, and their contribution to the SDGs. Additionally, public and private HEIs were compared by assessing differences in their sustainability performance.

The results reveal a significant disparity in the performance of Argentine HEIs across the rankings, suggesting that each ranking prioritizes different dimensions of sustainability. Institutions such as Public HEIs, such as the National University of Córdoba (UNC), the National University of Litoral (UNL), and the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) demonstrated better overall performance compared to private institutions, partly due to greater access to resources and institutional sustainability policies. Furthermore, a positive correlation was observed between investment in sustainability education and research and operational performance at these HEIs during 2024.

The study concludes that Argentine HEIs have significant potential to improve their positioning in sustainability rankings through deeper integration of education, research, and sustainable operational management. Recommendations are proposed to optimize the HEIs' performance in these rankings, aligned with the SDGs and the 2030 Agenda.
