Abstract

The present paper is a first attempt to assess the impact that the Mexican Revolution had on the Mexican economy. Using data from the contracts registered in the archive of notaries in the Mexico City, we analyze the effects that the revolt had on the life cycle of the firms. We know very little about the impact that the Revolution had on different sectors of the economy, however, as we show below, this impact was not symmetrical. We found that the Mexican Revolution had a negative impact on the life cycle of the firms operating between 1900 and 1929, and this effect is independent of the time span analyzed. As a consequence, during the decade of 1920 the economy suffered from a lack of capital accumulation and a low rate of investment. Our findings suggest that the impact of the Mexican Revolution was not as devastating nor such positive as the previous literature has stated.
