Abstract

Vuelta del Río, a Mapuche community in Chubut Province, has had land conflicts since the 1930s when the first land usurpations by non-mapuche people started. In 1991 the conflict continued in the judicial arena. This work focuses on the ways in which the people ofVue1ta del Río have defined the imposed social positions they were obliged to experience during the last decade. Even in the framework of the hegemonic orientations of meaning, the community has put in practice new affective commitrnents and alliances. The history of this conflict -and its wording in court files, mass media, and the mapuche parliaments- shows us the way in which the processes which differentially define and distribute subjects in the social space, may occasionally be challenged.
