Abstract

The Huarpe contemporary ethnogenesis has been shaped through multiple conversations and conflicts among a great diversity of social agents as well as through multiple discourses, representations and perceptions which lead to the building of a regime ofvisibility that contributed to the emergence of indigenous feelings of belonging and the construction of Huarpes cultural diacritics. The interaction between local intellectuals and the inhabitants of the Guanacache Lagoons between the 1920s and the 1940s was a critica! factor in this process. In this paper, we shall analyze those feelings of be!onging and definitions of the huarpe Self throughout the 20th century and we shall intent to identify sorne of the mechanisms that allow us to account for the construction of the Huarpe biological identity, community and imaginarles.
