Abstract

The belief, rationally established, that diseases would be circumscribed to each region, constitutes a central aspect of the western medical imaginary throughout almost all century XIX. This text raises the specific meaning carried out by the relation between disease and region in the construction of material and symbolic bonds between Brazilian doctors, the imperial society and the Monarchic State.
