Abstract

This article analyzes the academic and corporate strategies adopted by chemist-pharmacists throughout the period when Costa Rica was ruled by liberal governments. Their aim was to institutionalize their knowledge and exercise control & autonomy over their profesional activities, a development which would have brought about a reduction in the subordination to which they were subjected by qualified physicians. In spite of the significant collective efforts made in this area, success was only limited.
