Abstract

Reviewing the definitions that social sciences have given, and in spite of the wealth of philosophical. anthropological. sociological or political approaches to the violence phenomenon, we still do not have a global. operative and sufficiently contrasted theory that reports the origin, process and function of the violence in the political life. The political violence, as medium of support or challenge to the estahlished power, in its different modalitics, from state to insurgent violence, passing through the protest one must be examined in all its complexity, including both the rational and irrational conducts, the conscious or unconscious motivations, the personal utility and the altruistic motivations. Its study, that touchcs directly the problem of the legitimacy. requires an eclectic approach, but as subject intimately related to the proccss of social conflict. the polítical violence must be studied in its dynamic form, that is to say, historically.
