Misunderstood nationalization. Revisiting political nationalization: Schattschneider, Rokkan and the Argentine case

This article contributes to elucidating the concept of nationalization. It proposes that this task is best carried out if the resonance of the concept is considered; that is, the problematic context that led to its theorization. To this end, two fundamental authors, Eric Schattschneider and Stein Rokkan, are reinterpreted to show that each of them forged his theory based on a distinctive political problem. Once this difference has been established, the paper undertakes an empirical exercise that evaluates the suitability of Rokkan’s theorization to understand the Argentine political process. To this end, it studies long-term trends in party participation and competitiveness. It is concluded that Rokkan’s elaboration cannot adequately account for the process of political nationalization in Argentina and, with this, Schattschneider’s perspective turns ready for the purposes of political diagnosis of the problems and potentialities on Argentine political institutions.
